Evaluating the Impact of TDOE’s Early Reading Training on the 2021-2022 TN-URS Grades K-1 Performance (Report)

March 12, 2025

The Tennessee Literacy Success Act (TLSA), established in 2021, elevated the standards for teachers’ literacy knowledge and their students’ academic performance. This legislation requires that educators possess a deeper understanding of literacy concepts and effectively apply this knowledge to enhance student outcomes. To illustrate the impacts of this initiative, we have created a report and infographic that compares the 2021-22 academic performance of kindergarten and 1st-grade students based on their teachers’ level of participation in the Early Reading Training (ERT) courses provided by the Tennessee Department of Education. The results highlight the correlation between teacher training and student success. For a detailed summary of these findings, please download the report below.
