Teaching students to identify and spell the morphemes, or meaningful parts, of long words can help them learn to read those words proficiently.
The following resources are intended for instructors and tutors working with elementary students in Grades 3-5 who are experiencing difficulties reading and understanding long words. Unit 1 includes five lessons that focused on teaching suffixes and using the “peel-off strategy” to read and spell multimorphemic words.
Lesson 5. In this lesson, students will review the suffixes learned in Lessons 1-4. Lesson 5 contains multiple, short activities that will reinforce students’ learning by having them use the combination of suffixes to read and spell new multimorphemic words. After completing the activities, the teacher will assess students’ ability with unpracticed words.
